THE 2014 World Cup quarter-final between hosts Brazil and Colombia on Friday will be refereed by Spain’s Carlos Velasco Carballo.

The 43-year-old will be the man in the middle for the first of four last-eight ties as the two South American nations lock horns in Fortaleza.

He will be assisted by fellow countrymen Juan Carlos Yuste and Roberto Alonso Fernandez with Norwegian duo Svein Oddvar Moen and Kim Haglund the fourth and fifth officials respectively.

Carballo has already officiated two games at the tournament and has emerged as a surprise choice for the high-profile clash which kick starts the second phase of knockout action.

The Madrid-based official took charge of England’s crushing 2-1 defeat to Uruguay in Sao Paolo – during which he failed to send off Uruguay skipper Diego Godin for a second bookable offence – and Bosnia’s 3-1 win over Iran in Salvador.

The former industrial engineer, who has been on the Fifa list since 2008, has been a La Liga referee since 2004 but has never overseen an El Clasico fixture because of his Madrid affiliation.

Carballo has plenty of European pedigree since becoming a Uefa Elite Category official in 2009 and regularly oversees English teams in the Champions League, including Manchester United’s quarter-final draw with Bayern Munich at Old Trafford most recently.

His most high-profile appointment to date is taking up the whistle for the 2011 Europa League final as Porto beat Braga 1-0 at the AVIVA Stadium in Dublin – in the same year he was voted the Spanish FA’s Referee of the Year.

He was chosen as one of 12 referees for the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine for his first major international tournament and received the honour of handling the first game of the tournament as co-hosts Poland drew with Greece in which he sent off two players.

Carballo, regarded as consistent but a strict disciplinarian, dished out 129 yellow cards and eight red cards as well as awarding 12 penalties in 27 matches in all competitions last season.

In preparation for his first World Cup, he refereed three qualifying matches and was selected for the 2013 Club World Cup competition in Morocco where he took control of a semi-final.

Carballo is one of nine European referees in Brazil with Howard Webb, who oversaw the 2010 final in South Africa, representing England once again.

Brazil overcame Chile in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to progress beyond the last 16 after topping Group A on goal difference having collected seven points from their three games.

Colombia have had a smoother passage to their first ever World Cup quarter-final, winning Group C with three straight victories before comfortably beating Uruguay 2-0 in their round of 16 clash.
