CHAMPIONSHIP side Wigan Athletic have snapped up former Cardiff midfielder Don Cowie on a free transfer.
The Scotland international rejected a new contract offer with the Bluebirds to sign a two-year deal with the Latics, who narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion last season.
Cowie scored nine goals in 97 outings during three seasons with the South Wales club including 14 appearances in the top-flight in 2013-14.
"It's great to have signed, as soon as I heard of the interest from Wigan Athletic, I was keen to discuss coming here," the 31-year-old told the club's official website.
"The club has achieved a lot in such a short space of time and after leaving Cardiff, I knew this was the place I wanted to be."
He becomes Wigan's fifth signing of the close season following the arrivals of Andrew Taylor, Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, James Tavernier and Oriol Riera at the DW Stadium.
And Latics boss Uwe Rosler was thrilled to secure the signature of the ex-Ross County and Watford player.
"Don also played over 20 games last season in the Premier League; he’s 31 but he’s an extremely professional person and I’ve known about him for quite some time," he said in a statement. "From his training regime to the way he lives and breathes football he has the attributes to allow him to play football until his late 30’s. "I think he knows the position, he has the ability to play a high-pressing game and an attacking forward game and I think he will add experience, reliability, a technical ability where all our players have to be so I look forward to working with him."
Cowie will provide a much-needed option in midfield with the Latics now without the departed Jordi Gomez, Josh McEachran and Jack Collison, while Ben Watson and Chris McCann are long-term injury absentees.
