THE 2014 Fifa World Cup final was watched by a peak UK audience of more than 20 million viewers, figures have confirmed.

An average of 12.64 million watched Germany's 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina live on BBC One while ITV drew average ratings of just 2.9 million (12.1 per cent of all viewers).

16.7 million viewers tuned into the BBC at the peak time of 22:30 BST on Sunday with another 3.8 million people watching at the same time on ITV.

British viewing figures, though, were lower than the 2010 final in South Africa when Spain beat Holland after extra-time.

The BBC were down by 0.6 million viewers on average as ITV's increased by 0.1 million from four years ago.

BBC One's peak audience also decreased, from 17.9 million in 2010, while ITV had a peak audience of 3.8 million.

ITV's five-minute peak across the entire game came towards the end of normal time with four million viewers at 21:45 BST.

It was the most-watched event since the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, which attracted a peak audience of 27.3 million.

Elsewhere, a record-breaking 35 million watched Germany's fourth World Cup triumph on German TV while there was an estimated audience of 26.5 million people in the US.

The global television audience for the 20th World Cup final was estimated to be over a billion, airing in 70 different countries across the world.

ITV had 7.4 million viewers (peaking at 9.5 million) for their coverage of the third place play-off between Brazil and Holland on Saturday, almost three times their audience for Sunday's final.
