WITH an estimated TV audience of over a billion and more than 70,000 people inside the Maracana, Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli can be forgiven for caring about his appearance.

After just five and a half minutes of the 2014 World Cup final, the Bologna architect spotted himself on the big screen and quickly adjusted his wayward hair during a brief stoppage in play.

The footage has since gone viral with hundreds of thousands of views and shares on social networking sites.

Rizzoli, 42, was chosen for the Rio showpiece between Germany and Argentina despite accusations he favoured Lionel Messi during Argentina's 1-0 quarter-final win over Belgium.

The 2013 Champions League final referee was largely praised for his handling of the game but Manuel Neuer and Sergio Aguero were fortunate to escape punishment for strong challenges in the second half of normal time.
