SUNDERLAND have agreed a £14 million fee with Liverpool to purchase Fabio Borini on a permanent basis.
The 23-year-old impressed on loan at the Stadium of Light last season, scoring 10 goals and scooping the club's young player of the year award.
Black Cats boss Gus Poyet had an initial £10 million bid rejected last month for Borini, who netted seven times in the Premier League in 2013-14.
Despite the development, Borini was named in the starting line-up for Liverpool's pre-season friendly against Preston at Deepdale, after starting their first warm-up game against Dutch outfit Brondby.
And Reds boss Brendan Rodgers told BT Sport: "It's an agreement between the clubs but nothing agreed with the player as of yet. He is still very much a Liverpool player."
After becoming Rodgers' first signing as Liverpool manager, Borini scored just twice in 20 appearances during an injury-plagued debut season at Anfield.
The former Chelsea youth signed from Parma in the summer of 2012, having impressed the previous season during a loan stint at Roma, where he scored nine goals in 24 appearances.
Borini was a key part of Sunderland's late surge to avoid relegation last term, netting four goals in their final five matches.
The ex-Swansea loanee, whose only Italy cap to date came back in February 2012, also netted in the Capital One Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley in March.
Borini would become Sunderland's fourth signing of the close season, joining Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon through the entrance.
