LIVERPOOL'S new signing Adam Lallana is set to miss the start of the Premier League season after sustaining a knee injury in training.

The 26-year-old suffered damage to his lateral collateral ligament during a session at the Reds' training base in Boston during their pre-season tour of the United States.

Lallana, who joined from Southampton for £25 million earlier this month, will not require surgery but could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

The England international - part of this summer's World Cup squad - is expected to miss Liverpool's first three Premier League games against his former club Saints, Manchester City and Tottenham.

He could also miss England's opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland at the start of September.

Lallana, who excelled for Saints last year and earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year, was due to make his Reds debut in a friendly against Olympiakos in Chicago on Sunday.

The injury came in just his fourth training session with Liverpool after he and the rest of the club's England World Cup representatives joined the club in the USA on Monday.
