Sent-off: Fraser (Queen's Park)
BERWICK Rangers advanced to the second round after beating Queen's Park on penalties at Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium.
Goalkeeper Billy Bald was the hero for the Shielfield Park outfit, saving the vital spotkick from Paul Quinn in the shoot-out.
Both sides netted their first three with Andy Russell, Scott Maxwell and Dean Hoskins scoring for Berwick - and Scott Dalziel scored for the Wee Rangers either side of the two Queen's misses.
Earlier, striker Darren Lavery gave Berwick the perfect start after three minutes when his low shot from the edge of the box kissed the post on its way in.
Berwick - under the stewardship of player-manager Colin Cameron - were on top throughout the first half but failed to capitalise on their superiority.
And they were pegged back on 33 minutes when Ross McPherson rose highest in the box to head home from close range.
McPherson had a great opportunity to win the game in the second half for Queen's - who normally reside at Hampden Park - but he missed from five yards out with the goal gaping.
Gus MacPherson's side were reduced to 10 men during extra-time when Shaun Fraser was shown a second yellow card by referee Kevin Graham for diving inside the box.
Both sides rattled the woodwork in the closing stages as Quinn's vicious effort rebounded back into play off the underside of the bar for Queen's before Berwick's Russell thumped the post with a 15-yard shot at the other end.
It meant the lottery of penalties and Berwick held their nerve to become the first side to book their place in the second round.

Mixed afternoon: Versatile Hearts player Callum Paterson (above) scored in their win over Annan but later came off injured (Picture from Sky Sports)
Saturday 26th July 2014 Petrofac Training Cup 1st round
Hearts (King 8, Sow 19, Paterson 40) 3-1 Annan Athletic (Davidson 90+1)
KO 3pm
Referee: Calum Murray (Scotland) - Rating: 9/10 Attendance: 6,708
Venue: Tynecastle (Gorgie, Edinburgh)
Booked: Watson, Davidson (Annan Athletic)
HEARTS begun a new era at Tynecastle by easing to victory over Annan Athletic in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup.
Billy King opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Osman Sow scored on his debut as the Jambos dominated throughout.
Callum Paterson widened the margins further before the break before departing the action through injury.
A fine goal from substitute Scott Davidson in the final minute was merely a consolation for the visitors, who were second best.
It was the first competitive match of the campaign for Hearts after a summer of change in Gorgie following their relegation to the Scottish Championship.
New owner Ann Budge appointed Craig Levein as director of football and Robbie Neilson as head coach with eight new players also arriving amid a flurry of personnel departures.
Neilson handed debuts to five new signings - goalkeeper Neil Alexander, centre-back Alim Ozturk, midfielders Morgaro Gomis and Prince Buaben, and striker Sow.
But it was a familiar young face from the previous regime that made an early impression as King broke the deadlock.
The winger - a constant threat of creativity - surged away from two defenders before firing a low shot clinically across Annan goalkeeper Alex Mitchell.
The second arrived 11 minutes later when Dale Carrick flicked the ball into the path of Sow, who strode into the box before clipping home.
Paterson made the lead unassailable five minutes before half-time with a powerful header from a King corner.
But the versatile 19-year-old was soon stretchered off with an injury to his left knee and replaced by Jordan McGhee at the interval.
Carrick and Kevin McHattie came close to extending the Maroons' lead in the second period but Annan pulled one back late on when Davidson curled a beautiful shot beyond Alexander.

Arbroath (Murray 89) 1-4 Alloa Athletic (Simmons 9, Spence 54, 70, 83)
KO 3pm
Referee: Don Robertson (Scotland) - Rating: 9/10 Attendance: 560
Venue: Gayfield Park (Arbroath, Angus)
Booked: Cawley, McCord (Alloa Athletic)
GREIG Spence scored a hat-trick on his return to Alloa Athletic as they beat League Two side Arbroath 4-1 at Gayfield Park.
The Wasps were in front after just eight minutes when Graeme Holmes's cross was cleared to Stephen Simmons, who flicked the ball in the air before smashing an unstoppable volley into the top corner.
Potent striker Spence then doubled the lead after 52 minutes, turning home Liam Buchanan's excellent cutback.
The 22-year-old former Celtic trainee, who scored 12 goals for Raith Rovers last term, added his second on 72 minutes as he slotted home from Kevin Cawley's lofted pass.
And he completed his treble with seven minutes to go, nodding home Marc Docherty's pinpoint centre with a powerful header.
The Red Lichties got on the scoresheet late on through a deflected effort from Simon Murray but it was merely a consolation as Allan Moore suffered defeat in his first game in charge.

BRORA Rangers pulled off a first round shock in the Petrofac Training Cup as Zander Sutherland's hat-trick ensured an extra-time win over Stenhousemuir.
Sutherland bundled home the opener from close range, although there was some controversy over whether the ball had actually crossed the line.
League One Stenhousemuir levelled from the penalty spot through Martin Grehan, who had been fouled by Grant Munro.
But Sutherland netted twice during the additional half-hour for Highland League side Brora.

Falkirk made light work of their Petrofac Training Cup first round meeting with East Stirlingshire.
Will Vaulks's first-half header, Alex Cooper's strike after the break and Rory Loy's penalty put the Bairns firmly in command.
David McKenna pulled one back for Shire before Loy netted his second.
Botti Bia Bi fired home Falkirk's fifth before Blair Alston added two more for the visitors in the closing stages.

Brechin City came from behind to beat Cowdenbeath in extra-time to cause a Scottish Challenge Cup shock.
Championship side Cowden went in front when Sean Higgins fired home in the first half, however, the League One visitors forced extra-time when substitute Robert Thomson slotted home.
And a drilled strike by Alan Trouten followed by Ryan Ferguson's effort ensured victory and a place in round two for Brechin.
East Fife upset Forfar Athletic in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup at Bayview Stadium.
Striker Jon McShane headed the League Two side ahead on the quarter-hour mark and Ewan Moyes doubled the Fifers' lead two minutes before the break when he nodded home Kevin Smith's delivery.
League One Forfar pulled one back when Dale Hilson slotted home but they could not find a leveller.
Stirling Albion reached the second round of the Scottish Challenge Cup with victory over Elgin City at Borough Briggs.
After a goalless first half, Darren Smith broke the deadlock with a rising right-foot shot early in the second period.
Gordon Smith netted the first of his two goals from the penalty spot following Matthew Cooper's red card for the hosts - and he converted a Steven Doris cross to complete the scoring.
Peterhead progressed to the second round with a comfortable win over nine-man Montrose at Link's Park.
Andrew Rodgers headed home James Stevenson's cross to give the visitors an early lead and then laid on the second for Rory McAllister before Stevenson finished another Rodgers assist from close in before half-time.
Montrose duo Graham Webster and Gary Wood were both shown straight red cards either side of the interval by referee Colin Steven.
Goalkeeper Neil Parry was the hero as Albion Rovers caused an upset in the Petrofac Training Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory over Lanarkshire rivals Airdrie.
Liam Watt gave Airdrie the lead early on but Ali Love levelled six minutes before the break.
Nathan Blockley then edged the home side ahead again before John Gemmell sent the match into extra time where neither side found a winner - and Parry saved from Marc Fitzpatrick and Jamie Bain as the shootout finished 4-2.
Barry Ferguson's first match as manager of Clyde ended in victory as the Bully Wee shocked League One Ayr United.
Scott McManus gave the League Two side the lead when he diverted Kevin Watt's cross into the net early on - and John Sweeney's penalty following Nicky Devlin's foul on Scott Ferguson doubled the hosts' advantage just before the half hour.
League One Ayr had chances after the interval but could not find a way back into the match.
New Greenock Morton boss Jim Duffy secured a narrow win over Spartans in his first match in charge to reach the Petrofac Training Cup second round.
Cameron O'Neil's 27th minute strike proved to be the difference in a tense contest as he exchanged passes with David McNeil before firing home past goalkeeper Kevin Swain.
Spartans were unable to find a goal to take the game into extra-time despite golden chances for Michael Herd and Keith McLeod.
Debutant David Robertson settled a seven-goal thriller in Livingston's favour during extra time against Queen of the South.
Queens raced into a two-goal lead after Andrew Dowie's header was followed by Iain Russell's close-range strike within 56 minutes.
Craig Sives nodded home immediately to give Livi hope and they soon levelled through Daniel Mullen's right-footed effort.
The visitors struck first in extra time as Myles Hippolyte netted but they were pegged back by Michael Paton's shot before Robertson scored from six yards.
Sean Winter scored an injury-time winner as Stranraer came from two goals down to stun Dumbarton.
The Sons went ahead when Jordan Kirkpatrick's cross drifted straight into the net and doubled their lead through Mark Gilhaney.
Stranraer captain Frank McKeown's 20-yard strike gave the League One side hope and his back-post header squared the match up before Winter's acrobatic finish snatched victory four minutes into injury time.
