JOHN Beaton has been confirmed as the referee for Rangers' first round tie with Hibernian in the Petrofac Training Cup on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Category One official will be the man in the middle as the two former SPL giants meet for the first time since January 2012.

The clash was delayed due to Ibrox staging the Sevens rugby at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Beaton will be assisted by David McGeachie and Andrew McWilliam, while Stephen Finnie will perform fourth official duties.

He has also been assigned to Saturday's Scottish League Cup first round tie between Montrose and Falkirk at Links Park.

The North Lanarkshire whistler has risen up the pecking order since receiving his first SPL match between Dundee United and Dunfermline in March 2012 and became a Fifa referee in the same year.

Beaton - who is also a communications officer at the University of Strathclyde - took charge of 34 matches in all competitions last season, handing out 115 yellows and eight red cards.

His first appointment of 2013-14 was Rangers against Albion Rovers, also in the first round of the Challenge Cup, as the Gers ran out 4-0 winners.

Last season's runners-up Rangers will be looking to make amends in the Challenge Cup this term and book a second round tie with Clyde, managed by former captain Barry Ferguson.

It will be a first competitive match in charge for new Hibernian manager Alan Stubbs, who was appointed after Terry Butcher was sacked following the club's relegation from the top-flight.

The game will be screened live on BBC ALBA, kicking off at 19:35 BST.
