THE Ayrshire derby between Kilmarnock and Ayr United at Rugby Park was the pick of the ties for the second round of the Scottish League Cup.

It will be the first time the two rivals meet since January 2012 when Killie won 1-0 in the semi-finals of the same competition on their way to lifting the trophy.

All Premiership teams besides those featuring in Europe entered the draw - which took place at Murrayfield - although Dundee United have a bye to the third round.

2013 winners St Mirren entertain Dunfermline in Paisley while the winners of the Queen's Park v Rangers tie will host Inverness Caley Thistle.

Newly promoted Dundee welcome Ramsdens Cup holders Raith Rovers to Dens Park and Ross County travel to Stranraer for the second season running at this stage of the competition.

Top-flight newcomers Hamilton are up against Alloa, Partick Thistle make the trip to Greenock Morton and Peter Houston's Falkirk take on Championship relegation favourites Cowdenbeath.

Elsewhere, Hearts make the short trip to Fife to face Stenhousemuir and Hibernian host Dumbarton while Championship sides Livingston and Queen of the South do battle at the Almondvale Stadium.

Inverness, who went agonisingly close to winning the trophy last year before losing on penalties to Aberdeen, knocked Rangers out at Ibrox two seasons ago and may have to do the same again should Ally McCoist's men win the one outstanding tie from round one.

Holders Aberdeen, Celtic, Motherwell, St Johnstone and Dundee United all enter in the next round.

The second round ties will be played over August 26 and 27.
