ANDY Woolmer has been confirmed as the referee for Monday’s SkyBet Championship encounter between Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town.

The 47-year-old will oversee proceedings as the mid-table Latics and ninth-placed Tractor Boys do battle in the televised clash, live on Sky Sports.

Simon Barrow and Oliver Yates, both from Staffordshire, will be the assistant referees while the fourth official will be Andy Haines (Tyne & Wear).

Woolmer, who has been a postman in his hometown Northampton for 18 years, is one of the longest serving referees in the Football League.

He has been on the National List since 2004 after spending a decade running the line, with the last three years spent in the Premier League, which included a prestigious appointment to the 2003 Community Shield where Manchester United beat Arsenal on penalties at the Millenium Stadium.

Following the appointment at Wigan’s DW Stadium, it means Woolmer has now officiated at every ground in the top four divisions of English football in his 22-year career as a match official.

It will be his third Championship match of the season after previously handling Millwall’s 2-1 win over Blackpool and Nottingham Forest’s 4-0 victory over Reading last month.

Woolmer also took up the whistle for Bristol City’s 3-0 away win at Port Vale in League One on Tuesday night.

He has taken charge of seven games in all competitions so far this season, brandishing 19 yellows and awarding one penalty but is yet to flash a red card.

In 2013-14, Woolmer, who is regularly selected to be a fourth official in the Premier League, was in the middle 30 times across the campaign.

His yellow card count averaged at almost three per game [with 86 in total] while he sent only two players off and pointed to the penalty spot five times.

Heading into Monday’s game, 16th placed Wigan have taken just eight points from their seven league outings and Ipswich have taken four more points, leaving them two adrift of the play-offs.
